The Montessori Infant environment is a safe, welcoming and nurturing environment that focuses on all areas of your child’s development with special focus on each child’s independence, cognitive and emotional growth and language. Our Montessori trained infant guides prepare the classroom with exploration in mind. The space is safe and designed to meet the developmental needs of the youngest members of our MIM community. The Montessori education at this level is based on both physical and brain development. Our Montessori guides follow the infants’ schedules and allow them to nap when they are tired, eat when they are hungry, and explore when they are ready. Our purpose is to provide a loving and inviting place for each child to begin a life of love for exploration and learning.

Children learn from experimenting with what is around them. They are like sponges with five senses. They taste it, touch it, hear it, see it, feel it, and then lick it again for good measure. For children ages 15 to 36 months, the need for rich experiences is imperative, and that is what the Montessori staff and the Montessori environment are equipped to provide. Trained staff members, with a wide variety of resources, personally observe and assist the child to exercise mind, body, and spirit in true independence. Our toddler space is to toddlers as outer space is to adults it’s a whole “new world,” unimaginably exciting and diverse. Children learn best when they are in a community with their peers, where they feel safe and valued, and where their physical needs are met. This is when they can practice new skills and challenge themselves for the next level. Development proceeds at varying rates from child to child as well as within each child’s range of social-emotional growth. The teacher sets up the environment for the child to control and take care of, helping the child to build independence, respect for the environment and self- esteem. When the child feels pride in his/her work, it creates a sense of belonging that says, “Hey, I can do this, and I feel good!”

Children between the ages of 3 to 6 years of age are astonishing. They start moving with remarkable speed and surefootedness. They learn to speak a language! Many begin reading stories and figuring with numbers. This development is entirely normal, yet nothing short of miraculous. These are the children of the primary class. How fortunate if they attend our Montessori school. The teachers are especially sensitive to what is developing within the child. More importantly, they know that these “miracles” happen at different times and at different speeds for each child, and so they take care to stimulate without pressuring, to challenge without compelling. The Montessori classroom provides an array of sensorial learning materials, much of it specifically designed by Maria Montessori. But, perhaps more significantly, the classroom provides a social environment, a child-sized world wherein, in addition to personal development, the child may learn an essential sense of community cooperation, peace, sharing, respect, thoughtfulness, and generosity.
