Elementary Class
The elementary class is a natural extension of the primary class. Montessori students do not “start school” at age six or seven. Rather, they continue and deepen the process of discovery and self-development that is already well under way. Guided by knowledgeable teachers, they are aided and attracted by ever-more advanced Montessori learning materials. Their core curriculum—reading, original writing, math—is highly individualized, not only because the age range is six through twelve, but also because receptivity and ripening abilities vary so much. Still, in many other areas, the students may do projects with a partner or in groups. Instruction in art, music, and foreign language continues. The study of the natural world (animal and plant life, geography, cultures, space) and its history take on a deeper, more formal caste. It’s a big, wide, wonderful world. Our goal is to help our students know it, love it, and live in it productively. |
